Koh Payham: Thailands best kept secret island
Those chasing the scenery and atmosphere of old Thailand before it was commercialized and lost much of its charm are often drawn to the untouched, secretive island of Koh Phayam. While enjoying the peacefulness and relaxing at the beach is an incredible experience in and of itself, exploring the food, the culture, and all the attractions the island has to offer makes for a complete experience.
While Koh Phayam isn’t a place for shopping enthusiasts (thank god), what it offers instead is the exploration of its marvellous tropical forests, unique beaches, and exotic wildlife.
The best island to enjoy your Beach volleyball experience with all the BVAW stars!

How to arrive
Best Way to Travel from Bangkok to Ranong
Travelling from Bangkok to Ranong is not that complicated as you have plenty of transportation options to choose from. The best way to travel from Bangkok to Ranong depends on your needs:
- The most comfortable way – taking a direct flight from Bangkok DMK Airport to Ranong Airport
- The cheapest way – taking an overnight bus as it helps you to save one night at the hotel
- The most adventurous way – taking a train to the nearest station and then transferring to a bus
Just choose the way to travel depending on your preferences.
Flights from Bangkok to Ranong
At the moment there are 3 daily flights departing from Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK) to Ranong Airport (UNN). Two of these flights are offered by Nok Air, the third one – by AirAsia. Flights depart at 06:05, 11:40 and 18:30. The flight takes approximately 1.5 hours. You must choose one of 2 earlier flights if you are willing to reach Koh Phayam on the same day.
Flight deals and the current schedule for this route can be found here:
Once you arrive at Ranong Airport, there are usually taxis waiting to take you to the city or directly to the pier.
It is also possible to fly from Bangkok to Chumphon Airport (CJM) which is located about 122 km from Ranong or Surat Thani Airport (URT) which is located around 220 km from Ranong and then take a bus or mini-van from there to Ranong, but it is really unpractical.
Bus from Bangkok to Ranong
When looking for the cheapest way to travel, taking an overnight bus from Bangkok to Ranong normally costs less than the flight and you save one night at the hotel. Of course, this option might be not suitable for light sleepers.
Buses to Ranong depart from Bangkok Southern (Sai Tai Mai) Bus Terminal. The journey from Bangkok to Ranong takes about 8-9 hours.
When taking an overnight bus, you can catch the first-morning ferry to Koh Phayam and spend your day on the island. The daytime bus departs around 9:00 and arrives at Ranong too late for catching a boat to Koh Phayam on the same day so you would need to overnight in Ranong.
Buses from Bangkok to Ranong are offered by the government bus company Bor.Kor.Sor. and several private bus companies – New Mitr Tour, Lignite Tour and Choke Anan Tour. Most of the departure times on this route are around 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00.
You can buy a ticket right at the bus station. However, it is safer to book tickets at least one day in advance as the number of seats on these buses is limited. The bus schedule can be checked and tickets can be booked here:
You can book your bus, train or ferry tickets online via Bookaway
Buses normally stop at Ranong Bus Station but private companies can also drop you off at their offices in Ranong.
Train from Bangkok to Ranong
There is no direct train from Bangkok to Ranong because the nearest Ranong railway stations are located in Chumphon and Surat Thani. If you are adventurous and want to experience train travel in Thailand, you can take the Southern Line train from Hua Lamphong Railway Station to any of these cities and then transfer to a bus or minivan for reaching Ranong from there.
Check train schedules and book train tickets online here:
